The Need For Ethernet Over DS1

What do you do when you want the best of both worlds? You try to blend them together and this is what Ethernet over DS1 really is. Many enterprises are looking to extend the workhorse technology of their LANs: the Ethernet as far as possible. The service providers are pushing to maximize their workhorse technology the SONET and SDH networks. Ethernet of DS1 is a first step in that direction.

Ethernet has been the most successful technology in the LAN space. It has been revised and reworked and re-standardized to keep up with the growing need for bandwidth among the enterprises. At the same time, the mass roll out of technology has meant that Ethernet continues to remain one of the cheapest technologies for LAN networks.

No wonder that most enterprises prefer to stick with Ethernet even for longer distance connections. As long as they can keep their networks on this reliable and inexpensive technology, they will keep demanding the same. However, getting Ethernet beyond the customer premises is a tough and challenging proposition as it requires installing new infrastructure.

For the service providers, the PDH and SONET or SDH technologies have been the true work horses. Over the years regardless of the service, the bandwidth and the customer needs, these standard technologies have allowed the services providers to deliver the best services to their customers. For the service providers these continue to remain the preferred transport for any bandwidth requirement from the customer.

Service providers have invested extensively in laying out the copper for the PDH networks. This pre-laid infrastructure is just too lucrative to be overhauled for a completely new Ethernet based infrastructure to meet the needs of the customer. Hence, the sweet spot for both parties is Ethernet of DS1.

One of the leading solutions for this kind of setup is the Bonded T1 or the Bonded DS1 service. The DS1 rate is 1.5 Mbps. By bonding multiple DS1 links, higher capacities in multiples of 1.5 Mbps can be achieved. Generally up to 12 DS1s can be bonded to deliver Ethernet service. Generally though 7 to 8 DS1 are commonly used.

Thus it is clear that Ethernet over DS1 is truly the best of both worlds. It satisfied customer needs for extended Ethernet solution while keeping line with the existing infrastructure with the service providers. Technologies like the Bonded T1s help bridge this gap without requiring a major overhauling of the copper network already laid out.
