What do you do when you want the best of both worlds? You try to blend them together and this is what Ethernet over DS1 really is. Many enterprises are looking to extend the workhorse technology of their LANs: the Ethernet as far as possible. The service providers are pushing to maximize their workhorse technology the SONET and SDH networks. Ethernet of DS1 is a first step in that direction.
Ethernet has been the most successful technology in the LAN space. It has been revised and reworked and re-standardized to keep up with the growing need for bandwidth among the enterprises. At the same time, the mass roll out of technology has meant that Ethernet continues to remain one of the cheapest technologies for LAN networks.

One of the leading solutions for this kind of setup is the Bonded T1 or the Bonded DS1 service. The DS1 rate is 1.5 Mbps. By bonding multiple DS1 links, higher capacities in multiples of 1.5 Mbps can be achieved. Generally up to 12 DS1s can be bonded to deliver Ethernet service. Generally though 7 to 8 DS1 are commonly used.
Thus it is clear that Ethernet over DS1 is truly the best of both worlds.
